Horse Auction 2016
Thirty-eight horses, colts and mules were sold at the annual ADC Horse Auction held in Benton at the Saline County Fairgrounds on March 12, 2016. Total revenue from the sale was $29,015, with a gray gelding fetching the most, at $4,150, according to Farm Administrator David Farabough.
The North Central Unit in Calico Rock is the main location for ADC’s horse program. It serves as the breeding and training ground which supplies other units with work horses.
In preparation for the auction, NCU Sgt. Tom Green evaluates each horse for such characteristics as temperament, kid-friendliness, willingness to stand still for long periods of time, aggressiveness, and nipping tendencies.
“That way, at the auction, I can let the potential buyer know exactly what they are getting,” said Green, which he did with no exceptions.
“These horses provided years of service to the Department of Correction in providing safety and security to the State of Arkansas,” said NCU Warden Stephen Williams. “It's only fitting that we retire them to loving families who can care for them in the years they have left.”
